Have you ever skipped rocks? It used to be one of my favorite pass times when I was a little girl. Perhaps it was because my Dad taught me how to skip rocks, his always bouncing perfectly over the water before quietly disappearing while mine possibly got one skip before clanking to the bottom of the lake. It took some practice, getting the hang of the right technique to get the water to create the perfect rings formulating the peaceful vision of a rock calmly floating on top of the water.
I am a believer in the fact that actions speak louder than words. Something I recently realized was the true impact that one person or one action can have on those around them. Thus, bringing the idea to have my students think of random acts of kindness to do throughout the day at school. Each of them wrote a small note to a teacher of their choice. One class handed out the candy whoppers and told people in the hallway to have a “Whopping Day” and another class wrote positive sayings on strips of paper and tossed them from upstairs so that students could catch them during passing periods below.
As I was picking up any unclaimed positive sayings I heard a student read theirs aloud: “You are someones reason to smile”, that student simply smiled and said, “This made my day” before continuing on to class.
It may not seem like much, but perhaps that is the point. It doesn’t take much to make others feel important, wanted, special.
I have the opportunity to see about 100 students a day and for those 100 students to see far more people beyond that. It is easy to forget the powerful concept of impacting others.
Never let the rock you should be skipping weigh you down so much that it never makes a ripple effect.
Now go ahead…make someones day.
