It is weekends like this one that make me ready for all things Fall. Slight overcast clouds and a breeze from the north make us Texans hopeful for days spent in flannel sweaters, wrapped up in a blanket, crockpot suppers on the stove, and the Cowboys ever letting us down on the TV. Although it is hard to say goodbye to the long glorious days of summer, the season of fall gives us a new crisp outlook and a breath of cool air to fill our lungs.
This weekend I was blessed to see all of my grandparents and get in a little Oklahoma loving. I spent the summers in Oklahoma as a kid out on family land with each set of Grandparents. Before the days of cellphones and MacBooks, my brother, cousins and I were entertained by the great outdoors and Super Nintendo. I love hearing even older stories about my Grandparents, long before I would ever become apart of their lives. My Dad’s parents ran The General Store and Post Office in their small community. My Dad told a story this weekend that I hadn’t heard before about my Grandfather. A young girl had been sent by her father to the store to ask my Grandfather to borrow $10. The man told his daughter to tell my Grandfather that he would pay him back… but that he just needed $10 at the time to get by. The young girl told my Dad years from that day that my Grandfather didn’t ask her any questions, just reached in the cash box and pulled out $10.
In times like these, when the world seems to move so quickly and life is summed up in 140 characters or less, stories like these seem to keep me grounded. It will always be the integrity and trust we put in others that will place meaning in our lives. Never forget that a good laugh with friends, sitting and enjoying your families company, and hearing stories about times long gone…those are the times worth remembering (and perhaps even tweeting about.)
